MCAT: Psychological, Social, and Biological Foundations

The MCAT is a standardized exam that students take when applying to medical school in the United States. It is a significant exam for premed students, as it determines which medical school they will attend. The MCAT consists of four sections: Chemical and Physical Foundations of Biological Systems, Critical Analysis and Reasoning Skills (CARS), Biological and Biochemical Foundations of Living Systems, and Psychological, Social, and Biological Foundations of Behavior. When students prepare for this test, they usually focus on biology, chemistry, physics, and organic chemistry. While these sections are essential, the Psychological, Social, and Biological Foundations section is one that students should also spend adequate time studying. This section consists of 59 multiple-choice questions that must be completed in 95 minutes. Students are tested on concepts in psychology and sociology and should understand cognitive psychology, social psychology, psychological disorders, conditioning, learning, the brain, neurons, memory, and behavior.

There are different types of questions in this section, including concept questions, scientific reasoning and problem-solving questions, research design questions, and data-based questions. Concept questions focus on recalling definitions and terms. Scientific reasoning and problem-solving questions require students to apply psychology concepts to patient scenarios. Research design questions ask students to evaluate experiments, identify confounding variables, recognize control groups, and understand how research studies are conducted. Data-based questions require students to interpret graphs, tables, and statistical data.

This section is important because physicians must understand the psychological and social factors that influence a patient's behavior and overall health. For example, when treating a patient with diabetes, a doctor should consider medications as well as the patient's lifestyle, stress level, finances, and cultural beliefs. Physicians must be empathetic toward patients to help them during challenging moments.

To prepare for this section, it is important to use active study methods. Study methods include active recall, the Feynman technique, concept mapping, chunking, and spaced repetition with flashcards. Students should also complete practice exams to prepare for the exam. When taking practice exams, it is important to review incorrect questions to identify which sections need review. This section is important because it helps healthcare providers provide better care in the future.
